Beth Chatto’s: A plant enthusiast’s nursery

Join us for an evening with the Beth Chatto team as the panel from the renowned nursery and gardens share their expertise and discuss how Beth’s pioneering principles continues to shape their work today.

Established alongside the Gardens, the nursery was fundamental to Beth. Her transition from house wife to renowned nursery woman began out of necessity: she started selling plants simply to fund the creation of her own garden, but that modest venture soon blossomed into a thriving career. Leading garden designers and plant aficionados have long recognised Beth Chatto’s as the place to come for truly garden worthy plants. Head Gardener Åsa will share some recent plant introductions as well as old favourites.

Beth left a remarkable legacy. Carrying her philosophy forward means staying true to the original principles of ecological gardening and sustainability. Today, with Julia at the helm, we remain committed  to keep the values she championed at the heart of everything we do. That commitment has guided our peat-free journey and our decision to move away from herbicides and pesticides, ensuring the practices she believed in continue to shape our future.

While many of the propagation practises and techniques originally taught by Beth remain the same, there has also been some major changes in recent years. Emily will share how moving away from traditional peat involved trialling a wide range of alternative composts and adapting the watering regime. In addition to the panel discussion there will be a workshop where Emily shares her best propagation tips and techniques.
