Garden Museum Late: Clare Woods & Sabine Moritz
Celebrate four hundred years of tapestry making in Britain after hours with a chance to explore our new exhibition Threads of Ascent - Tapestries by Clare Woods and our recently conserved Mortlake tapestry. Enjoy live music, a glass of wine and drop-in textile and art making activities.
Threads of Ascent presents three newly commissioned large scale handwoven tapestries created by Dovecot Studios, Edinburgh, from intimate scale watercolours depicting climbing weeds. These works transform moments of close observation into monumental woven landscapes, inviting a reconsideration of the plants that are so often overlooked or dismissed.
Be amongst the first people to enjoy the Garden Museum’s Mortlake tapestry depicting the earliest image of a woman gardening in our collection. The tapestry has just returned after a year long conservation project and goes on display for the first time. Join the Garden Museum’s Curator Emma House for an introduction to the tapestry and the conservation process.
The evening also offers an opportunity to see Sabine Moritz: Lie Down in Green Pastures in her first Museum show in the UK. Sabine Moritz draws on her recollections of growing up in the German Democratic Republic, exploring family, memory, home and displacement through richly textured sketches and intimate, emotive canvases. The majority of paintings have never been exhibited before, with imagined landscapes of plants encroaching on the concrete suburbia of her childhood, including a vast abstract work painted especially for the exhibition, and floral still lifes taking the viewer on a journey of memory and experience of the natural world.

Textile Making
Join artist Cathy MacDonald for a hands-on textile workshop inspired by the rich colours, textures, and storytelling of the 400-year-old Mortlake tapestry alongside Threads of Ascent – Tapestries by Clare Woods. Drawing on historical and contemporary traditions, you'll create your own beautiful hand-embroidered textile using a range of simple embroidery stitches and textile techniques. This relaxed and creative session offers an opportunity to slow down, explore the tactile qualities of thread and fabric, and leave with a unique embroidered piece.
Memory Landscapes
Create a print inspired by nature and imagination. The landscapes we remember are often made up of small details like a winding path, a gnarled tree, or dappled sunlight. Using memories as a starting point, we will create a scene beginning with collagraph printmaking, a technique that uses layers of material to make a textural print. We will then add collage paper, paint and other embellishments to personalise your print. Inspired by Sabine Moritz's exploration of memory and landscape, this relaxed drop-in workshop led by Alice Ridgway, an artist specialising in woodcarving, gilding and traditional decorative arts, invites you to experiment with texture, colour and layering. All ages and ability are welcome.
The café will also be open from 17.30 serving their award-winning seasonal menu.
