Branch Out | Fox Tales

This workshop is part of the Garden Museum’s Branch Out programme, a series of free events and activities exploring gardening, art, floristry, plant science, history, design, and more!

Fox Tales: How can we learn from the fox to prepare for climate breakdown?

This workshop series will enter into the nocturnal ecology of the fox to explore how we can learn to adapt amidst rapid environmental change.

Shadow Existences

It’s a misconception that foxes are nocturnal - but rather, they avoid - or shadow - human activity, the night providing a useful human-less period. Foxes thrive in our shadows, away from human attention.

Foxes are often perceived as a pest. It is a British tradition to hunt them, they are derided for their nuisance. But we’re the intruders; in deep time foxes precede us by tens of thousands of years on the British Isles, and in recent decades the build up of south london has threatened their habitats.

Walking at dusk, these workshops will “shine a light” on the unseen and under appreciated world of the foxes. The walks will explore:

How foxes “play” with ideas of nature, belonging and ownership

The ways in which human activity has encroached on foxes and other animals’ ecologies

How we can learn from urban foxes to adapt for an uncertain future

Through a series of situated shadow vignettes, the walks will explore the hidden lives of the fox and learn how we can similarly adapt to a rapidly changing environment.

Route

The route will circumnavigate the Garden Museum, stopping at Paradise Gardens, Archbishops park and the Riverside by Lambeth palace. At each stop a different shadow puppet/vignette will guide us in thinking-through the fox.

Take-aways

Each participant will be given a fox pin, acting as a visual prompt for them to pass on the Fox Tales
